This dance music video collaboration holds special meaning for me.
It all began when a close friend asked me if I would be willing to help choreograph for her first EP music video entitled "SINK".
Not only was this project an opportunity to share my love of expression through movement, it was an opportunity to dance and work alongside my soul-sisters from college. After several phone calls between California and New York, Jasmine, Malia and I converged at our alma mater in Santa Barbara, CA to create and film this project.
Similar to the journey of the song, creating the movement for this piece was a true artistic process, born from the dynamics of our friendship with one another, as well as our individual stories beyond our shared time at Westmont College. Although our paths have taken us all over the country, the bond of friendship we share keeps us connected and supporting one another across time zones.
Each of our personalities and movement styles shine individually in this piece. moving through and around one another, yet connected by the melody and tempo of the song. The play between fluidity and rigidity creates a tension that ebbs and flows with the notes, just like ocean waves crashing on the shore, an image from which Jasmine drew inspiration for the lyrics. Moments of shared movements and timing create harmony amidst the differences. The choreography culminates with each member releasing into individual expressions, letting go of uniformity and surrendering to the interpretation of the song.
